As said earlier, the senses are the interface between the outside world and the our central nervous system. As a learning organism, the external world is "re-presented" internally. Thus we form an internal sensory "map" of the external world, by which we navigate.

Our representational system is a living, growing and evolving whole, and to better understand the whole system, NLP divides it into its sensory components:
